“As the World Turns” got the shout-outs – but “Birdman” took the top prize at the SAG Awards Sunday night.
The film about a former superhero actor trying to revive his career with a Broadway play won for its cast, the SAG Awards’ equivalent of best picture.
As the cast assembled on stage to give its thank-yous, it was obvious that only star Michael Keaton had anything prepared, describing acting as “the ultimate team sport” and saying he was “proud to be a part of this group.”
But Naomi Watts was tongue-tied and waved to her colleagues, which was when Zach Galifianakis took the microphone.
“When I was on ‘As the World Turns,’ ” he began – a callback to lead actress winner Julianne Moore, who began her thank-you speech by recalling her time on that soap opera.
Moore won for “Still Alice” and is considered the front-runner for best actress at the Oscars.
“Birdman?” It’s very much part of the best picture conversation, but “Boyhood” and perhaps even a dark horse like “The Theory of Everything” could have something to say about that.
The cast prize was the only honor “Birdman” won at the SAG Awards.
