One of only four 290 MM (Mille Miglia) models ever built, Fangio was just one of the legendary drivers who held its wheel.

Aside from stunning good looks and an unbeatable racing pedigree, RM Sotheby's' Peter Wallman described it as "a car with which Enzo Ferrari was personally involved (with) and a fundamental part of Ferrari folklore." Higher estimates put the car at $32 million.

Way beyond the reach of James Bond, the <a href="https://www.astonmartin.com/en/heritage/past-models/db4gt" target="_blank" target="_blank">DB4GT Zagato</a> is a true holy grail for car collectors, most of whom can only salivate at the prospect of owning one. A collaboration between the famed British marque and the Italian coach builder, only 19 were ever produced. It sold Thursday for $14.3 million, breaking the record for a British car sold at auction.

A collaboration between the famed British marque and the Italian coach builder, only 19 were ever produced. It sold Thursday for $14.3 million, breaking the record for a British car sold at auction.

It is scarcely possible for the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing to get any more desirable -- unless, like this one, it was driven by the great <a href="http://www.stirlingmoss.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank">Stirling Moss</a>. An icon's icon, it still wears the livery from Moss' second overall finish at the legendary Tour de France in 1956.

It is scarcely possible for the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing to get any more desirable -- unless, like this one, it was driven by the great Stirling Moss. An icon's icon, it still wears the livery from Moss' second overall finish at the legendary Tour de France in 1956.

1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial by Scaglietti, estimated $5 million to $6.5 million —

Not content to offer a single museum-quality 1950s competition Ferrari, RM Sotheby's also auctioned this knockout, finished in "French Blu." With a rebuilt engine but lots of original patina, it's eligible to participate in the world's top historic events.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I by Pininfarina, estimated $6 million to $7.5 million —

Of course it's not only Ferrari's racing models that make the grade -- road cars like the the famed 250 GT Cabriolet have skyrocketed in value. This example is the 14th of just 40 built.

1959 BMW 507 Roadster Series II, estimated $2.3 million to $2.6 million —

For a German car that's not a Gullwing to find itself in such exalted company is news in itself. However as RM notes the 507 is as important to collectors as it is to sports car history as a whole.

2015 Land Rover Defender 90 Station Wagon —

At a special sale in London on December 16, Bonhams will also auction the 2,000,000th Land Rover built since 1948, specially commissioned to celebrate 67 years of production and one of the last ever to made as the model nears retirement. All proceeds will go to charity.

9 collectible cars on sale this December

A Porsche once driven by Janis Joplin sold for $1.76 million, at RM Sotheby’s inaugural Driven By Disruption collectible car auction, held Thursday night in New York.

The Queen of Rock’s psychedelic 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet was originally expected to fetch anywhere between $400,000 and $600,000.

Another highlight was a 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato that sold for $14.3 million, breaking the record for a British car sold at auction.

Earlier in the year, RM Auctions, the world’s largest auction house of collector cars, joined forces with Sotheby’s. The new partnership’s first auction showcased “extremes of motoring history” with a highly-curated collection of 30 investment-grade automobiles.

The score includes one of the world’s most valuable and historically important cars, the ex-works 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti, built for racing legend and five-time World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio, to compete in the 1956 Mille Miglia.

The vintage motor was expected to bring in between $28 million and $32 million, and sold for $28 million.
