Southern Barbarians, Japan —
Measuring over 3-meters-long, this magnificent golden screen depicts Portuguese seafarers in a Japanese harbor -- the artwork called "Southern Barbarians."
Dating back to the 17th century, the gilded screen was "created at a time when the Japanese were grappling with an influx of European merchants and missionaries," said the gallery.
"The screens have been traditionally interpreted as scenes of cultural encounter with exotic foreigners."
