Story highlights

First, there was #ThanksgivingWithBlackFamilies

Now, we have #ThanksgivingWithHispanics and #ThanksgivingWithWhiteFamilies

CNN  —

Social media can get a little predictable during the holiday season, and Thanksgiving is no exception. We can only take so many pictures of green bean casserole and turkey prep.

Fortunately, black Twitter is injecting unexpected hilarity into the social media echo chamber.

People are making light of the best and worst parts of Thanksgiving with two hashtags that are spawning memorable memes and offshoots: #ThanksgivingWithBlackFamilies and #ThanksgivingClapBack.

They originated with black Twitter, where people ponder the black experience, and took off, resonating across cultures. After all, who hasn’t experienced the emotional turmoil of abandoning the kids’ table for the adults?

#ThanksgivingWithBlackFamilies pokes fun at what happens when family comes together for the holiday, from that shady cousin who sneaks off for hours to the fight for the last turkey leg.

#ThanksgivingClapBack foretells the sniping likely to occur when antagonistic relatives “catch up.”

We’ve all been there, so it’s not surprising that social media users of other races and ethnic groups are getting in on the fun.

Happy Thanksgiving!
