Ben Affleck told Ellen DeGeneres that he and ex Jennifer Garner are "good friends"

Affleck also praised Garner to The New York Times

CNN  —

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are “good friends” and putting the children first, Affleck said Tuesday.

In an appearance on “Ellen,” host Ellen DeGeneres praised the actor for his behavior in a “challenging year.”

Affleck agreed.

“You know, we’re good friends, and we’re doing our best, and our kids are fabulous, and we’re working our best for them,” he said of his relationship with his estranged wife.

Affleck, who is starring as Batman in next week’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” has been reluctant to talk about his split with Garner, which happened in June. But Garner alluded to difficulties in a March Vanity Fair cover story, describing Affleck as “a complicated guy.”

She told the magazine, “I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

In an interview with The New York Times, a reflective Affleck said he didn’t like to talk about his personal life “because it ends up being in the record somewhere, in the great miasma of junk on the Internet.”

But he added that his family was going to join him during filming of the next Justice League movie, and he praised his estranged wife.

“Jen’s great. She’s a great person. We’re on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that’s the reality that I live in.”

He added that he took the Batman role for his young son, but now that he’s become the Caped Crusader, he finds it a “mixed blessing” with his child.

“He also thinks that for some reason – I don’t know if it’s the color combination or whatever – that the FedEx guy is the Joker,” he said.
