SKOPJE, Macedonia (AllPolitics, June 22) -- First lady Hillary Clinton Tuesday received Albania's highest civilian honor, the Mother Teresa Award, while in Skopje.
The first lady of Albania, Lidra Mediani, gave Mrs. Clinton the award at an event to announce new private aid efforts for the Kosovar refugees and the people of Macedonia.
"I am deeply honored to receive the Mother Teresa award because it represents the commitment, the compassion, and the resources that have been brought together to combat the humanitarian crisis in the Balkans," Mrs. Clinton said in a statement.
Mrs. Clinton also said she was proud to receive an honor named after the late Mother Teresa, whom she met on several occasions.
The inscription on the award notes Mrs. Clinton's work for humanitarian aid in the Balkans, but it is also meant to mark her work for aid and human rights worldwide.
